We’re looking for performers who can pull off over-the-top comedy acting while authentically nailing 80’s pop/rock vocals.
Singers in a Smoky Room is a hilarious, high-energy, over-the-top ’80s jukebox musical bursting with zany characters and a story that moves like it’s going off the rails on a crazy train. Welcome to the Flashback Club—an electric ’80s venue with rockin’ live house band, Tease! Packed with the most rad pop and rock hits of the 1980s, Singers in a Smoky Room is cheeky, laugh-out-loud fun with a ton of heart. You’ll be, like, dancing in your seat and singing along!
Chord Watts (Male, early - mid 20’s)
Lead singer of 80’s rock hair band (à la Guns & Roses, Aerosmith etc.) Powerful rock vocals, over-the-top physical comedy chops. Character drips with Rock God charisma when fronting the band, but sweet and down-to-earth otherwise. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but lots of heart.
Must prepare (a capella or backing tracks):
- 1 uptempo 80s rock song (1 minute)
- 1 80s power ballad (1 minute)
- Scene sides will be provided for a cold read
Mick Rimer (Male, early - mid 20’s)
Hip hop vibes (à la Fresh Prince, Doug E Fresh, Kid & Play, etc), high-energy, super friendly. Mick is the bartender who’s secretly dating the club owner’s daughter. He’s funny, earnest, and always ready with a one-liner or entertaining advice.
Must prepare (a capella or backing tracks):
- 1 fun 80s rap song (1 minute)
- Any 80s pop/rock song (1 minute)
- Scene sides will be provided for a cold read
Martie Martin (Female, early - mid 20’s)
Over-the-top energy and delivery, heavy valley-girl speak. Big comedic chops. Martie is the nightclub owner’s daughter who is looking to be taken seriously by her father who still sees her as his little girl. Pop vocals with power ballad abilities.
Must prepare (a capella or backing tracks):
- 1 uptempo 80s pop song (1 minute)
- 1 80s power ballad (1 minute)
- Scene sides will be provided for a cold read
Tasha Brooks (Female, early - mid 20’s)
Exceptional singer and Martie’s best friend. Tasha is head-over-heels for the band’s lead singer, Chord. Naive yet passionate and ready to be noticed. 80’s power ballad vocals, high belter.
Must prepare (a capella or backing tracks):
- 1 uptempo 80s pop song (1 minute)
- 1 80s power ballad (1 minute)
- Scene sides will be provided for a cold read
REHEARSALS:
Beginning in March, evenings/weekends (schedule TBD)

*In-person auditions will receive priority, but video submissions may be considered for special circumstances. Callbacks must be attended in-person.
