3 AM in the Persian Room

Kay Thompson has been called “the most famous person you’ve never heard of.”

She was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1909 and died in New York in 1998. She was an actress, singer, dancer, radio star, choreographer, composer, musician and the creator of the children’s books, Eloise. She was Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Lena Horne’s voice coach and Liza Minnelli’s godmother. Liza said of her “There were no barriers for Kay. She broke through everything. She taught me how to live.” The New York Times said of her “Miss Thompson is of the type which not only would launch a thousand ships but first would design and build them.” NYT 1957

Janet Gigliotti and Christopher King want to re-introduce us to Kay Thompson through her songs and stories in this uplifting cabaret style show. Written by Janet Gigliotti, Christopher King and Robert McQueen. Directed by Robert McQueen.

It is 3:00 a.m. in The Persian Room of New York’s Plaza Hotel on December 17, 1961.

Alone on stage is Kay Thompson…
