A rare chance to see two of Canada’s finest recording artists performing their songs in such an intimate setting. Come hear these talented writers sing and tell, sharing their songs, their stories, and their journeys, for a truly inspiring and uniquely entertaining experience – this special fundraising concert is on for two nights only!

The evening will be all the more special given that the theatre is located in the Deep Cove Cultural Centre which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012. Jim Byrnes, right from the beginning, supported the idea of a building for the arts in Deep Cove. He was involved with fund-raising to get it built and has provided his continuing support with concerts over these many years.

About Jim Byrnes

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, “blues country”, if anyone can sing the blues, it’s Jim Byrnes. He is one of Vancouver’s most popular musicians, as well as one of Canada’s best-known actors (noted for his starring roles in the series “Highlander”, “Wise Guy” and his own variety show “The Jim Byrnes Show”). Jim is a singer solidly rooted in the traditions of blues and R&B. This was recognized in 1996 when Jim, noted for his evocative smoky vocals, won a Juno Award for his release “That River”, for the Best Blues/Gospel album of the year … and again in 2007 when his first outing with The Sojourners, “House of Refuge”, won the Juno Award for Blues Album of the Year. His latest release, “Everywhere West “, carries on in that grand tradition, recently garnering Jim his third Juno Award in the 2011 Blues Album of the Year category. Jim continues to tour actively in North America and Europe and to build his film and television resume.

In a stylishly converted English farmhouse, Bernard is preparing to entertain his chic and sexy mistress for the weekend. He has arranged for a chef to furnish a gourmet meal, and is in the process of packing his wife off to her mother’s house. He has also invited his best friend over to provide an alibi. It’s foolproof. What could possibly go wrong?
Marriages, mix-ups and mayhem combine to create one deliciously naughty show!

Quality Time
with Charles van Sandwyk and the Brandywine Boys
Thurs, Sept 1st, 2011

Quality Time is an evening of stories and songs featuring Charles van Sandwyk and the Brandywine Boys. Charles, one of Deep Cove’s genuine treasures, is an internationally renowned artist who charmed us a few years ago with his sold-out performance of The Painter Mouse. It was a show featuring projected paintings and original story telling. Now he returns with new stories and will divulge yet another of his talents, that of singer. This new show of Charles’ has a folksy country feel and he is backed up by the tremendous talent of the Brandywine Boys.

Roy Forbes In Concert
Sept 9 and 10, 2011

An intimate evening with Canadian Music Legend Roy Forbes in Celebration of his 40th Anniversary in the biz!
In Jan, 1972, eighteen-year-old Roy Forbes (as “Bim”) did one of his first tours with blues legend John Lee Hooker, traveling by station-wagon, braving the snowy January BC highways, absorbing tricks of the trade that make him one of the finest live acoustic performers anywhere. Roy played at festivals, coffee houses, clubs and in concerts with a bunch of the others — learning from them as they did from the ones whose shoulders they stood on.
Today Roy Forbes is a “veteran,” part of the generation that came of age in the late sixties, early seventies that just happened to refashion popular music. Like those other “legends,” Roy today is at the top of his game and able to hold a crowd spell bound, whether a few hundred at a workshop or ten thousand in front of a festival main stage.

May 5 – 21, 2011

Starring Mark Gash and Cameron McDonald
Directed by Ryan Crocker

A Hollywood movie production has over-run a small rural town in Ireland. And Charlie and Jake, two men looking for new lives, take jobs as extras. One is an aspiring script-writer trying to get someone of influence to read his script. The other is overwhelmed when the beautiful American star of the movie takes an interest in him and particularly his accent.

Through Charlie and Jake we learn about the townsfolk as they cope with the Hollywood dream machine in their sleepy farming town and the illusions it conceals, with wonderful humour, and much honesty.

From their perspective as faces in the crowd, Charlie and Jake tell us the story by shifting from one character to the next, showing us the people who inhabit this place, and their way of dealing with the chaos that outsiders can bring and the dreams they can offer.

Amazingly it is all done without the benefit of a net.

Stones in His Pockets, a comedy by Irish playwright Marie Jones won the Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Award for Best Production in 1999 as well as winning two Olivier Awards and receiving three Tony Award nominations in 2001.

Directed by Danielle Benzon

Anna has become the mistress of a wealthy benefactor and plans to take advantage of his generosity by showering Claire with gifts, parties, and lavish affections.
Claire has fallen in love with a young girl and wants Anna to distract her chaperone for an afternoon.
Catherine is homesick, confused, and just wishes someone would remember her name…

In this charmingly devilish comedy about love, cruelty , and vice, David Mamet employs a Wildean wit to explore the relationship between two sophisticated women at the turn of the 20th century.
In the seemingly harmless setting of a Victorian drawing room, he pushes the boundaries of friendship and pride, and the thin line between love and desperation.

How far would you go to keep the one you love?

Storm Warning is another great comedy by Canadian playwright Norm Foster, directed by Darlene Manchester.

Set in 1953, this is the story of a damaged World War II veteran and the free-spirited woman who attempts to change his outlook on life. Jack (Ryan Crocker) and Emma (Cheryl Hebb) are thrown together by fate one weekend and their lives will never be the same.

“Foster has outdone himself, writing a play that not only entertains and keeps the audience enthralled from start to finish, but a play with a depth of character and story that takes the audience away and out of themselves for an evening.”
Kelly Young, Kincardine News.

Storm Warning marks the twelfth Norm Foster production produced by First Impressions Theatre. It runs May 27 to June 12, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm.
